Soundtrack of a site specific piece commissioned by the Getty Center in Los Angeles for a dance and music production of post modern Butoh choreographer OGURI and composer YUVAL RON. The event took place on June 7th, 2002 and received rave reviews.
The work titled "In the Shallows" explores the connection between sound, architecture and movement in a way that never been seen before at the Getty Center. The event included pre-recorded soundscore, live singers and the Renzoku dance company in an investigation of the relationship between humans and the Getty Center courtyard environment. Choreographer Oguri and Renzoku Dance Company performed in the water fountains and around the courtyard. The dancers led the audience through the courtyard, from fountain to fountain, including the hidden corners and sites. Thus, the spectators were given an opportunity to experience different perspectives of the surrounding architecture.
Yuval Ron’s surround sound score connected, sonically, all the architectural elements of the courtyard. Ten speakers, positioned around the courtyard, enveloped the audience with sound. Through carefully positioned microphones, the three fountains in the courtyard were be amplified, incorporating the rhythms of the water as an integral part of the musical texture. In addition, the pre-recorded sound score included percussive sounds originated from the building materials of the courtyard, i.e. stone and glass.
The score featured two female singers who were positioned in a balcony above the courtyard, near one of the fountains and various other locations in the courtyard.
