Music & Words: Ladino/ Hebrew Traditional
An Armenian love song leads to a medley of two traditional songs of the Ladino Diaspora (Ladino, the language spoken by the Jews of Spain). The first instrumental tune is “Axerico de quinze anos”, most likely preserved by the Jewish Sephardic community of Salonica, a Seaport city in Turkey. As
guest guitarist Carlos Valesco joins in on rhythm guitar, the ensemble introduces the second tune “Los Bilbilicos” sung by Maya Haddi, first in Ladino and then in Hebrew lyrics. While the Hebrew verse is based on the thanksgiving prayer, the earlier Ladino text invokes the image of the nightingales, who sing with sighs of love, as the lover’s soul and fate suffer from love's torment.
